Eco-friendly products that actually make a difference and aren’t just greenwashed.

It does not mean being an eco-conscious person means purchasing all products made of bamboo or that you should live off-grid. It focuses on the consummate changes one can make to daily life in order to preserve the environment without breaking the bank or disrupting the routine. However, not all the products that are considered green are good to the Earth.

These are the best ways to slice through the clutter, and the very swaps that can work.

1. First, beware of GREENWASHING

Eco, natural, and organic is a lot of times nothing more than marketing.

If you have a shampoo brand that tells you it is natural yet there are 5 kinds of plastics in the packaging of the shampoo, this is unsustainable.

Check for:

  • Limited packaging (preferably recycled or compostable)

  • Certified eco-labels (such as USDA Organic, Fair Trade, B Corp, and so on)

  • Honest labels

2. Reusable >> Disposable (Each Time)

The process of exchanging disposable items with reusables will reduce waste immediately.

Try these:

  • Bamboo or steel straws

  • Disposable or reusable cloth pads or menstrual cups

  • Disposable water bottles

  • Use of tote bags as opposed to plastic bags

  • Instead of cling film, beeswax food wraps can be used

3. Environmentally friendly goods that are worth the money

Cleaning:

  • Bioenzyme carpet shampoo

  • Vinegar + baking soda = general clean up

  • Refillable spray and soaps

Beauty:

  • Shampoo bars

  • Bamboo toothbrushes

  • Recyclable pack (glass > plastic)

Home:

  • LED bulbs

  • Upcycled furniture

  • Formula based detergent or wash sheet

Grocery:

  • Bulk shopping

  • Farmer markets > packaged

  • Green garbage bags

4. Less > Recycle

People learn to recycle, but it is more important to change consumption.

Do not buy something that you will never need. All skin care is not to be saved. By doing this, do not buy impulsively because something is labeled as eco.

Being environmentally friendly means not to be trendy but deliberate.

5. More ways to have a positive impact on the planet (no product required)

  • Have meals that are plant-based more often

  • Walk or bike as much as possible

  • Fix, not discard

  • Bring your own mug, bottle, cutlery

  • Keep local eco-business going

  • Write/share to friends and family about sustainability

Conclusion:

You do not have to be perfect to take care of the planet. One person not accepting a plastic bottle today means thousands less that died in the sea in his/her lifetime. Start with a single swap. And continue to grow.

Because it is not that Earth needs a few people to do it perfectly, Earth needs everybody to do it—not perfectly and never as perfectly as it can be, but with intention.
